Visiting Colleges
One of the best parts of my job is visiting colleges. This year alone I have visited schools in Southern California, British Columbia and the Midwest. Each school has its own feel and special programs. At one school in Canada you can get your Bachelors degree in Business and your Commercial Pilot’s License all in one. Capilano University, just outside of Vancouver has the most state of the art film department of any school on the West Coast. One of the reasons I visit so many schools is so I can help students, not only with which schools they should visit, but with how to make the most of those visits!

The tour guides can be a wealth of information, as they give a student perspective. Here are some questions you might want to ask the tour guide when visiting:
- What are some unique programs to your school? For example, one school I visited recently has a nationally renowned cycling team and an equestrian team. I wouldn’t have known that if I hadn’t asked.
- Where do students live? What percentage lives on campus? How easy (or hard) is it to find off campus housing?
- What happens on a typical weekend?
- What surprised you the most about your school?
- What other schools did you consider? Why did you choose this one over those?
- How do students get back and forth from the airport to campus?
- What has been the best thing about this school?
